Software Testing - Top 10 Tips to become an effective Software Tester

Author: Sanjeev

The major plus points that i will discuss here are from my own experience and i would love it if you could share some of your opinions/comments on the same:

1) Technical Edge: No employer would want someone who is not up to date or technically sound. One needs to re-sharpen ones skills whenever the chance or need arises.
2) Hard work and Dedication: Technical aspects aside, one has to work hard and be very attentive at all times due to the critical thinking involved in testing projects. Any carelessness/laziness, and the very person (the tester) who has been chosen to point out the mistakes would be making a lot of them. Hence, a lot of patience and hard work is expected.
3) Adaptability: This is a special skill and will actually take a tester to greater heights. For example if you need to learn a bit of new technology for an upcoming project and executing it, then your adaptability will bring in more knowledge and highlight your capability more and more. However, this must not be carried to extremes where you might end up doing something which is beyond your scope of learning or understanding. Somethings are better left to specialists.
4) Highlighting Risks early: The ability to highlight risks early in the project can help to remove a lot of suffering during the subsequent phases of the project. The risks identified must be brought before the management and written down by the Test Lead in the test strategy in order to identify corrective actions.
5) Soft Skills: Often during client calls we find testers who are unable to comprehend what the Subject matter experts are saying and this creates a lot of confusion. Hence it is wise to avoid future frustrations by letting the Subject matter expert/developer know that you haven\'t understood what he/she is saying. Also, don\'t make the mistake of asking the same questions over and over again as this will totally blast the mind of the opposite fellow! Always take notes during a call/developer interview while gathering inputs for testing and send an email confirmation on your understanding. The most important skill is to listen and confirm your understanding with the developer or else there is more chance of defects entering into your testing cases while writing them than executing them! If you feel your communication skills are weak, then JOIN a weekend course! It\'s YOUR career! So many testers out there you would be lost if you don\'t stand out in the crowd!
6) Choose a right time to change the job: Always make sure your paycheck is fat enough to suit the market standards or else you might lose out in the crowd again and will being to de-motivate you. Always make a move after a minimum of 2-3 years and this reshuffle everything in our mind and keep you fresh. Do not change the job because your project is tough etc, change only if you have spent enough time in the current organization, you have contributed enough in the number of projects etc, if you think you are extremely underpaid.

7) Dress Code: Have a great sense of dressing and always look fresh, not to attract women but appearance matters a lot in this arena wherein just by looking your dress your personality can be judged. However, you dont need to go for asuit or anything but just the basics like good looking shirt/trouser etc. This can differ greatly on the work culture across various organizations.
8) Gossip: Avoid Gossiping about office matters with colleagues. Always refuse to give any information that you feel could be an item of gossip. This could infact target you in the long run.
9) Secrecy: Never discuss any personal matters with colleagues as they are not always best friends. Their patterns change when they are competing with you.
10) Always be in the good books of the BOSS! : It is always good to be in the good opinion of your boss as it will fuel your growth better and faster. However, this doesn\'t mean you need to polish their shoes to get into their good books! Always highlight to them what you planned to achieve and what you actually have in all aspects and keep them updated so that they will know what you are up to. Most managers have a 'Plan' in place for their employees and this helps them track their progress. Following that 'Plan' religiously might help in enhancing your image in front of your boss.

How to become a software tester?

Author: Sanjeev

So you have decided to start finding faults with computer applications and some might have already taken some courses on software testing. But, while applying we all face some hurdles for that coveted job of a sotware tester and below are some tips on how to pave your way to become a software tester.

There are some categories you fall into if you are planning to take up software testing as a profession, and i have given some suggestions on how to take up this profession as a full time occupation:

1) You are a fresher: All freshers have fresh minds when they are just out of college and can
take up new assignments easily. Therefore, it is advisable to learn a few automation tools thoroughly
and practice for a few months before applying for any job. A fresher looking out for a job as a manual tester will only find his/her time passing away. Learn the Tools! Now!

2) You are a graduate and its been quite sometime looking for a job (kind of jobless): You need to take this seriously now and complete the ISTQB certification and some additional lessons on Database as this will help you to get a grasp of some technical stuff. The first question you will be asked is what you have been doing all this while, so you can always get your way through by saying
preparation for higher studies or preparing for a technical career in software testing etc. I really dont know how the employer will buy this but if you are technically sound in automation tools like Selenium, loadrunner etc they will surely listen to you!
3) You are working in a different work-stream (non-IT): This is a golden opportunity for you as the field in which you are working might have fetched you a lot of domain expertise. For example, if you have been working in a Bank for five long years then all you need to do is to take some certification exams in the Banking Domain and get yourself a testing (ISTQB) certification.Once you have all this in place you can start applying for software testing job or even a Business analyst position as there is a serious dearth of 'Real-time' domain experts out there.
4) You are a housewife/homemaker and dont want to go to an office: You got to look for freelancer jobs on the internet.
5) You a software developer: This calls for some serious thought as you know how to write code and test it as well! Now thats an awesome combination. This profile suits well for White-Box testing and ofcourse if you want to be a manual tester, then you need to uncondition your mind to behave like a tester (finding faults with the Code).

I have tried to give as much information as possible for people from different stages where they want to try and become a software
tester.

All these things must be recorded precisely so the programmers can identify them and get them fixed as soon as possible.

Future Trends in Software Testing Careers

Author: David Fox

A software tester is an IT related professional whose function is to uncover bugs or unexpected flaws in completed software applications prior to public release. These individuals are valuable team members whose role is to assist the software development team in uncovering faults or undesired behaviors in programs or applications.

Software testers can save the developers time and money by discovering program flaws early, thereby avoiding the necessity of having to release patches or fixes down the road. And in the worst case scenario, early detection of critical bugs will prevent the need to rebuild the software application from the flawed code on up.

Some software testers are third party contractors. The reason for this is to ensure that the tester is completely objective and performs their job to the best of their ability. Software testers perform standardized tests as well as customized tests that often were never considered by the designers, but that are logical from the perspective of the end-user.

Software is constantly evolving, and as such is becoming more and more complex. The programming languages and coding schema are so intricate that software testing is becoming more critical over time. Additionally, the software testing industry is part of the general IT field, which itself is experiencing tremendous job growth. Job growth from 2008 to 2018 for software testing is predicted to grow at a much greater-than-average rate with an increase of 38%. Few fields offer as many careers with such a fantastic potential as Information Technology careers and particularly that of software testers.

The IT field is relatively new and software testers' job descriptions are constantly being updated. No degree is necessary for some software testing careers but certain characteristics and skills are required. The software tester who understands at least the most basic of software languages such as C, C++ and java will have an easier time uncovering bugs and flaws. Knowledge of software programming languages help in understanding what parts of the code may be at fault. Software testers may also have a four-year university degree in programming, software design, or computer engineering, or they may be recruited to learn on the job from suitable applicants.

The role of a software tester in a company is a proactive one and requires excellent communication skills as well as a large amount of tact. Software testers must be able to communicate well both verbally and in writing, and communicate to both professionals in IT as well as those in charge of funding.

There are many career opportunities for software testers. With the correct mindset and personality, a career in software testing can be a fulfilling one. Software testing opportunities exist for both the individual with a degree and for the determined and interested individual willing to learn on the job and study to improve their marketable job skills. Most companies know that even with a Bachelor's degree in IT, much of the software tester's true job skills will be learned by doing.

What's involved in a Software Testing Job?

Author: Helen

The aim of a software tester is to rid a company's software of bugs and ensure the software meets top quality specifications. As a software tester you would be expected to use a range of different tests and processes in order to determine the functionality of all aspects of each application. In essence, it would be up to you to try and ‘break' the software!

Qualifications

Specific software tester qualifications are few and far between, so in order to get an entry level job you'll need to demonstrate skills in other ways. It's not necessary to hold a degree, however studying subjects such as computer science at university should be a great help, especially in securing entry level work.

As a base you will be expected to have excellent technical knowledge of as many programming languages as possible (such as PHP, .Net and Java) and to understand the software testing cycle.

Skills and knowledge

You'll need to be quite diplomatic to become a software tester, as a huge part of your role will be feeding back to developers and designers about any bugs in their code or possible improvements that can be made. Analytical skills and insight to back up your suggestions will also help a great deal. On top of these characteristics employers will also be looking for the following:

• A good understanding of the software development process
• Good writing skills (for documenting the process)
• Good communication skills
• Good presentation skills
• The ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines

Of course on top of these person skills, you will also have to prove your technical skills and knowledge.

From an entry level position there are plenty of steps on the ladder as you develop your skills. For example; software test lead, software test manager, software test architect, and software test designer.

Salary and benefits

Career Change Time? Consider Software Testing

Author: Mikhail Portnov

The profession of software testing emerged in the early nineties when personal computers became more popular as they became more affordable. The fast-growing population of PC users created new opportunities for software companies as well as strong competition for the consumers business.

The new generation of software users quite naturally expected their applications to work as advertised. At the same time, market forces encouraged the fast release of new software often at the sacrifice of thorough testing. Defective software does not sell.

The software industry soon recognized that, to achieve success, they would have to set quality standards prior to release and create thorough end-user testing procedures in-house.

In 1992, I got my very first job as a Software QA Engineer literally by accident: an old friend introduced me to a small startup company in Newark where he worked at the time. My job there was to identify functionality and performance problems in a client-server database application.

I searched for fellow testers for professional networking; but I found none. I approached over two dozen software developers asking if they knew of anyone who tests software for a living. They had never heard of software testers and could see no use for them since they tested their own software.

I found myself wondering what growth potential, if any, there may be in this career. In particular, I wanted to know how much I could earn as a software tester. I approached our VP of Engineering with this question. He suggested that, if I stay with the company for five years and do really well, I might hope to make up to $40,000 a year.

A small group of developers who had heard this exchange were clearly skeptical. I read the look on their faces, "That'll be the day!"

In May of 1993 the startup I worked for collapsed. In the course of a week, there were five advertisements in the San Jose Mercury News for software QA positions. I sent a resume to each, which resulted in two job interviews the following week and one on-the-spot job offer.

My new employer was a multimedia startup. And guess what - that job paid 25 percent more than my previous one. Three months later I got a raise, which brought me to a $40,000 salary, exactly the projected five-year target thought to be unrealistic. My new employers were exceptionally successful. They sold the company profitably six months later. The new owners restructured the business and I was back in the job market again.

What I discovered in my new job search amazed me. Where I had found only five software quality assurance listings over the course of a week, I was now finding 10-12 listings a day. I had 3-4 interviews a week, sometimes two interviews a day, and received many offers within a month. The market had grown dramatically within a single year and the demand for software testers far exceeded the supply.

I chose the company that offered me strong exposure to automated testing, my passion at the time; but I could not help mulling over the amazing growth in demand for software testers and the equally amazing lack of supply.

In the mid-90s, software testing was still a new profession. Between 1994 and 1997, half of QA graduates of many small and big local QA schools became the first person in their companies specifically hired as software testers.

Today, most software companies have a dedicated quality assurance department with one or more managers and a staff ranging from junior testers to senior quality assurance engineers.

Before the recent recession, starting salary in QA was about $60,000 on average with 2-3 weeks spent on job search. Those who liked to change jobs every year or so as they acquired experience, saw their salaries grow to $90,000-95,000 within two-three years. When the recession hit Silicon Valley job market in 2001, there appeared to be no jobs at all for the inexperienced software tester.

But in the year 2007, the recession is over. On average, an entry level QA job seeker in Silicon Valley would get 2 job interviews a week. It seems to take only 3 or 4 interviews to land an offer. Finding a QA job today seems to be no more difficult than it was in the 90s.

Software QA is a unique job niche in many ways: Maturity is an asset in software testing unlike other IT fields. Maturity is easily marketed as patience, attention to detail, and tolerance for routine tasks, all of which are highly valued in software QA.

Whatever your prior education or work experience, it is likely to be an asset because there is likely to be software that specializes in your field of expertise. If you have experience in education, accounting, banking, publishing, workflow or contact management, sales, client relations, drafting, stock or bond trading, image processing, to name but a few industries, you will find software companies that target your field.

Testing software is basically about finding the discrepancy between the expected behavior of the application and its actual behavior. If you have an accounting background, for example, you are better positioned to understand what the expected behavior of a software application should be and how an accounting department would use it.

Testing is not a difficult concept to learn. We all have some experience testing something. We test new recipes, test-drive cars, double-check our change at the convenience store. In each case we are testing to see that the actual result meets our expected result.

Entry-level jobs in software QA do not require a computer science degree. The field covers a broad spectrum of technical proficiency. The niche is large enough to accommodate you.

We see individuals of all ages transitioning from H1B visas to green cards, for example, becoming two-income families and homeowners, and establishing themselves in their new country.

Software testing is definitely a consideration for college educated people of all the ages and professional background looking for a career change.
